Miatas don't like shopping carts

I decided to pull the Miata out today because 1) it was Friday which meant rush hour traffic would only be like the 2nd level of hell, 2) it was 60 degrees yesterday and 64 today in December so it was begging for it, 3) because why the hell not.

Finished up the working day way later than I expected and it was pitch black, raining, and the temp had dropped to 40. Still, I'm happy-ish since I at least got to take a little jaunt at lunch.

Stop at Safeway on the way home to pick up some Diet Pepsi (I could solely subsist on Diet Pepsi and I go through acute withdrawl when I don't have it). As I'm leaving the store I notice this Cotton-Head in a Tahoe which is parked across two hadicapped parking spots unload her single small bag then proceed to park her shopping cart directly in front of her truck. She hops inside as I deposit my nickle of change in the Salvation Army bucket (I'm a big philanthropist obviously) when she lets off the brake and rolls forward right into the cart. The cart must have been a fan of small Japanese girls who're happy to drop their top as the cart begins its journey across 3 rows of parking, narrowly avoiding a Prius and a 330 directly into the back of my Miata.

I sigh and walk over to the car to see how bad it looks and all I notice in the dark unlit parking lot is a quarter sized black smudge by the trunk lock. Oh well, it didn't hit that hard and it's not like I'm going to catch the old lady as she's already very slowly turning left onto the main road. Throw the soda in the passenger seat, head home and flip on the garage lights to get a better look. Turns out 19 year old plastic can be pretty brittle in 40 degree weather.

Don't like, probably just grab one of the millions in a junkyard.

Those finish panels get so damn brittle with age. I see broken ones quite often.

Good luck. Of the yards i've been to, the finish panel has either been smashed to bits (if it was a non rear-end collision) or smashed to bits (in a rear end collision). I'll eventually pick up an aftermarket one when I'm ready to paint the rest of the car.

Damn, I wouldn't have been able to resist the urge to chase her down. My car isn't anything particularly beautiful, but I hate when careless people screw it up even more.

It crossed my mind, but my philosophy when dealing with old women is to treat them as if they were my own grandma. Would I chase her down and ream her for some superficial plastic damage, nah. Still extremely obnoxious though.

Ya I can understand that. That's a good way to go about treating the situation. I'll admit that I have a pretty short temper so it would have been hard for me to let that go. Hopefully you can get that fixed soon!
